szcrit21szcrit11

we had the final crit last week. among the guest critics were liu xiaodu of urbanus, yu jia of yujia studio, zhang ziyang of  ingame, chen wei hang and peter knutson from alliance, and prof gong weiming and yang wenying from shenzhen’s architecture department.

most of the student groups started their presentations with trying to define “mixing” or “stirring”. weak presentations tend to justify their design decisions with “reasons” and social “issues” and hardly talked about their architecture in spatial or experiential terms. strong presentations talked directly about their work in a personally involved way, with simple graphical presentation.

the conversation after each group’s presentation could not be more varied. some critics, taking a more realist path, wanted to talk about the implications of the work if it were to be realised. some wanted to know what meaning it might have. we wanted to focus on the experiences one would have in the architecture.

SHENZHEN FACTORY x SCHOOL /

we asked our students in shenzhen to go into the city to discover situations where a more “mixed” sort of architecture could be observed. a group of them (zhang yibing, chen yuanxiong, zhang huijun, chen baohua, liang weizhen, luo zhiwen) found this gem:

in a former factory area with regularly spaced 4-storey slab blocks, there is a school that occupies almost 2 blocks (there is a warehouse on the ground floor that does not belong to the school). other blocks had been separately converted into KTV lounges, budget hotels, dormitories, small workshops, offices, restaurants on different floors.

SHENZHEN SUPER STIR, EXERCISE 2 – STIRRING FIXED IDEAS OF ARCHITECTURE

for the second design exercise, we wanted the students to rethink the fixity of architecture, what we think architecture should be. they soon realise that even iconic modern architecture need not have the fixity or solidity that we accord them. their spaces can be rethought to hold other kinds of programs. we can even make alterations and additions to their hallowed spaces or play off their architectural ideas. the lucky works of great award-winning architecture selected to undergo this mixing are Mies’ Barcelona Pavilion, Ando’s Azuma House in Sumiyoshi, Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, and Palladio’s Villa Rotonda. Students working in teams were asked to give a new program to these and to locate their stirred work in Shenzhen.

SHENZHEN SUPER STIR, EXERCISE 1 – STIRRING “FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION”

students were asked to rethink the persistent mantra of modern architecture “form follows function” by changing the use of any of the four everyday objects above.

SHENZHEN SUPER STIR

this is a design studio which kuu is conducting at the architecture department of shenzhen university for the 2008-2009 semester. together with the students, we want to rethink the idea of ‘clarity’ in conventional architecture thinking which as architects we have inherited (without any ambivalence) from early modernist architecture. we are interested in the notion of ‘mixing’ or ’stirring’. could this estrangement from clarity or definition lead us to new thinking about privacy, communality, and boundaries? ultimately, will this inspire us to think of a new kind of architecture?

through a series of exercises, ranging from scales small to big, students will attempt to give modern architecture a stir.
