One Night Design Salonというデザインイベントに参加した。

デザインとイベント。
どちらの言葉１つとってもものすごく今の中国っぽい。
更にその2つが組み合わさると、正直少しあやしい気がする。
もちろんそんな私の印象など関係なく、上海では毎週各種デザインイベントがあちこちで行われている。

その中で21人と決して少なくないデザイン関係者を集めて
直球で勝負しようとしたこのOne Night Design Salonというトークイベント。

トークイベントは難しい。
同じ言語とバックグラウンドを所有していないと会話は成り立たない。
１部中国語、２部英語、３部日本語という振り分けは残念でもありつつ現実的な決断だったと思う。
我々が参加した２部の参加者は国籍、言語だけでなく、職業、経歴がまちまちで会話どころではなかったが。

３部の日本人のしかも建築関係者だけのトークが一番話がまとまっていた。
結局最初の２部は前座であった感がぬぐえない。

上海というロケーションを考慮し、日本人イベントになるのを避けるために外国人を呼ぶ。
日本対中国（外国）という図式に終始する会話。

つまり中国（外国）にいる、日本の外にいるということ自体が、日本人にはまだまだ特別なんだなと実感。
でもだからこそ、外国にいるということだけを売りにしがちだけど、それも本当に違うなという実感。

We participated in the One Night Design Salon event at Node Lounge & Gallery last week. The combination of the words “design” and “event” in China seems a little suspicious because such combinations happen in Shanghai every week (in glitzy circumstances to throbbing music). 21 participants were divided into 3 groups over 3 sessions seated at a round table on center stage to talk casually about “design” and “china”. The first in Mandarin, the second in English and the last in Japanese. We were in the English session and it was difficult to talk. We had little in common other than the fact that we were all foreigners, and that we deal somewhat with “design” in our own work. The first two sessions felt like sideshows which lent a more international feel for the main Japanese event for a largely young Japanese audience. This discussion worked better because the participants could identify with each other, culturally or design-wise.

For many Japanese, being outside of Japan is already special. But we do not have to depend only on this reason to feel that what they do is already special. We should evaluate what they are actually doing in China.
