The late Robin Evans wrote about ‘thoroughfare rooms’ in his essay “Figures, Doors and Passages”, which when applied to homes, makes it ‘a matrix of discrete but thoroughly interconnected chambers.’ In such an arrangement, rooms have at least two doors; one passes from one room to another. This was common in Italy before 1650 as in Palladio’s Palazzo Antonini in Udine (1556) pictured above. And before the introduction of corridors leading to rooms with one door. In this plan, rooms which are inhabited feel like passages; there would have to be more chance meetings between inhabitants.

In our Minus-K House below, a father, his young 5-year old daughter, and some dogs will live in one of the houses. We made the 3×3m rooms into passage rooms where possible so that the daughter will have fun running around the house with her dogs.

For the new spa in Qingpu, the upper level has two large spa treatment rooms that are made of interconnected small passage rooms. Each of these passage rooms has a different use: a changing area, a shower, treatment beds, toilet, greenery, etc. Going from space to space, we hope the spa customer will feel pampered by the luxury of space, ironically because of a cluster of connected small spaces instead of one large one.
