in the japanese film hana gerila (guerilla gardeners), two emotionally alienated young people living in tokyo find connection with the vastness of the city through midnight acts of guerilla gardening. in a constellation of micro gardens around the city, they plant seeds in unexpected and “lonely” spots: next to a vending machine, along a railway track, in someone’s abandoned planter, under a lamp post, watering them carefully every night. when these grow into bright yellow flowers, they bring a little cheer to the lives of those dejected and lonely souls through serendipitous encounters. this is landscape design in post materialist mode or what we call soft design.
