the informal cafe scene in shanghai was first started several years ago by le petit xiao xiao on shaoxing road. moved to another secret location in the french concession, it is now joined by several others. together these make you feel that there is a new dimension to urban coffee culture here, beyond chic designer cafes with overly coordinated interiors or chinese interpretations of parisian cafes with oversized pastel sofas and expensive coffee.
居場所としての上海カフェ文化は紹興路の小小珈琲館によって始まった。そこが最近フランス租界のさらにひっそりとした一角に引越したのと同時期に他にもいくつか登場し始め、バブル系デザイナーズカフェや台湾喫茶店系以外の新しいカフェシーンを作り始めている。
cafe “nap” is so hidden, you would think thrice before walking up the four flights of dim narrow stairs that lead to it. once you enter its tiny doll-sized galvanised zinc door, you come to a Haruki Murakami land of small rooms with blue and green walls, salvation army furniture, old magazines, cds, charcoal sketches, more arty bric brac and a cool black cat. it is run by a young man from sichuan. evidently, he is on a different track; apart from those trying to make that first million yuan in doublequicktime. in this cafe, you might want to read about lost cats or mystery phone calls. finding it is half the fun.
napは本格的に隠れ家カフェ。階段を上がる前に本当にここでいいのかと何度も確認しないといけない。小さい金属ドア、緑と青の壁、使い古された椅子、昔の雑誌とCD、オーナーによるスケッチ、そして黒い猫。四川省出身の若いオーナーによる村上春樹ワールド。ここではいなくなった猫とか、不思議な電話とかについて読むのがいいかも。
gz cafe is in a more established group of lane houses. it is not hidden, but really feels like part of the community there. in one corner you see old folks sampling brazilian coffee, and in another, young people having a baking lesson. the setting is ikea meets your mother’s house. the book you might be reading is by chang ai ling. the friendly young owner, black plastic framed glasses and cultivating a pony tail, used to work in a taiwanese cafe in beijing. now he runs his own cafe with his girlfriend, in the way he likes.
gz cafeはより小奇麗な上海長屋住居エリアにある。それほど隠されてはいないが、その反面ここはコミュニティーの中によく溶け込んでいる。お年よりが珈琲を楽しんだり、若い女性がクッキーの作り方を習っていたりしている。敢えて言えば、ホーミーなセッティング。ここで読むのはアイリンチャン（張愛玲）だろうか。親切な黒ぶちめがねで長髪のオーナーは北京の台湾人カフェで働いていたことがあるそう。今は彼女と共に自分の好きなやり方で経営している。
plum gallery is in the same lane house complex with a charming forecourt. inside, a steady stream of passersby at its windows. it has a proper gallery vibe: white walls carefully coordinated with an eames bench and reupholstered old shanghai furniture. here you imagine having your coffee over wifi, reading about blogs or the guardian review. it is run by taiwanese advertising people who simply want to promote deserving talent and create a new urban culture for a city they love.
plum galleryは gz cafeと同じ住宅エリア内にある。素敵な前庭があり、窓からは外を行きかう近所の人の生活風景が見える。白い壁とコーディネートされたイームズのベンチや上海の古い家具があり、ギャラリーに相応しい雰囲気。。ここではインターネット上でブログやレビューを読むのが似合う。広告関係の仕事をする台湾人オーナーによる、新しい才能や文化を発信する場所として機能している。(概訳：佐伯）
