for the second design exercise, we wanted the students to rethink the fixity of architecture, what we think architecture should be. they soon realise that even iconic modern architecture need not have the fixity or solidity that we accord them. their spaces can be rethought to hold other kinds of programs. we can even make alterations and additions to their hallowed spaces or play off their architectural ideas. the lucky works of great award-winning architecture selected to undergo this mixing are Mies’ Barcelona Pavilion, Ando’s Azuma House in Sumiyoshi, Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, and Palladio’s Villa Rotonda. Students working in teams were asked to give a new program to these and to locate their stirred work in Shenzhen.
