we asked our students in shenzhen to go into the city to discover situations where a more “mixed” sort of architecture could be observed. a group of them (zhang yibing, chen yuanxiong, zhang huijun, chen baohua, liang weizhen, luo zhiwen) found this gem:
in a former factory area with regularly spaced 4-storey slab blocks, there is a school that occupies almost 2 blocks (there is a warehouse on the ground floor that does not belong to the school). other blocks had been separately converted into KTV lounges, budget hotels, dormitories, small workshops, offices, restaurants on different floors.
深圳（シンセン）大学テーマスタジオ第3課題ではいよいよ街にでてSuper Stir（超混在）を探しに行くことになっています。この課題もグループワークであり、そのうちの１グループの見つけてきたものがおもしろいのでここで少し紹介します。
現場は深圳ならばどこにでもありそうなRC造4階建ての一般的な工場街の中です。効率的にデザインされたインダストリアルな建物群が今は工場以外にも様々な用途へとコンバージョンされています。カラオケボックス、安宿、オフィス、食堂などが各フロアーに散在しているのですが、学生が特に注目したのはその雑多な中で普通に機能している小学校です。
except for explicit signs, you can’t really tell which part of each block is used for what purpose. ’school’, ‘factory’, ‘hotel’, ‘ktv’, ‘beef ball noodle shop’, ‘fashion store’, ‘curtains shop’, are all housed in the same building typology, according to how much space they are able to rent.
もともとが工場建築であるが故に、文字が中心の”中国式”サインがなければそれぞれの建物が何の用途に使われているのかは全くわかりません。それぞれのサインを読むとようやく学校とか工場とかホテルとかカラオケとか、ビーフヌードルとか洋服とかカーテンのショップとかがあることがわかる。それらが元同じビルディングタイプの中にそれぞれの必要面積もしくはアフォーダブル面積に応じて混在している。
the school’s boundaries are weakly managed by movable barriers and senior pupils.
これがその学校。学校の敷地は可動式フェンスや上級生達の見張り当番などによって”ソフトに”区切られるのみ。
the main “entrance” is kept open at all times, between small food shops that is also the unofficial school canteen.
いわゆる”正門”は常に開いている状態で、生徒の登校前の朝食の場ともなる小さな食堂に囲まれている。
the school’s only play and assembly ground is the former road between the ex-factory blocks.
校庭は元々公道であったはずの道路を”そのままの状態で”使用。朝の体操の時間も休み時間も、一般の学校と変わらない”普通の”方法で生徒達に使用されている。
its signage “li du school” is posted on the facade of a budget hotel, affixed next to another equally large sign that says “tian ya curtains”.
here we find a marvellous flatness: things without strong definition; things without hierarchy, without differentiation; that curiously begin to look like hilberseimer’s blocks, … with a perversion of his ideology.
麗都学校という校名のついた看板が、安宿のファサードに天雅カーテンという同じ大きさのサインと共に掲げられている。
ここでは全てがフラットである。つまりはっきりとした定義もヒエラルキーも区別もなく、イデオロギーこそ違うものの、ルードヴィヒ・ ヒルベルザイマーのブロックのように見えてくる。

this is apparently a very different kind of school environment, far from conventional. however, the school prefers to show itself in a normal manner, as we can see from their carefully cropped images in their official website. since it is funded entirely by private donors from the community around it, its unusual circumstance is unhindered by modern forms of organisation or governance.
この例は（中国であっても） もちろん通常の学校環境とは随分とかけ離れたものである。しかしその学校のHPからも伺えるように、学校自身はごく普通の学校だと自らをアピールしたいようである。貧しい地域の完全に地元の寄付金からなる私学であるため、このような特殊な環境が成立しうるのであろう。（概訳：佐伯）
