the structures of about twelve projects had already been completed when we were treated to a tour of cipea (china international practical exhibition of architecture) in nanjing, yet another collection of designer architecture in china. you’ve probably been exposed to the images of these projects and their concepts, but the solidity and roughness of the rc structures, and the sheer effort of sweating up stairs make you feel more positive about architecture again.
南京 cipea(china international practical exhibition of architecture)の現場に磯崎アトリエの佐藤氏に連れていっていただきました。 (ss)
sottsass’s clubhouse model at the site showroom and the real concrete version outside; deep bow, r.i.p. maestro.
isozaki’s conference centre: spaces inside are richer than what the exterior suggests.
holl’s contemporary architecture museum: heavy steel structures + overly dramatic gestures that scream “i am architecture, look at me!”
liu jiakun’s hotel: initial scheme with stepped roof and laminated facade looks more interesting than the built version which is of pitched roofs and facing bricks.
matti sanaksenaho’s villa: a cross between casa malaparte and holl’s helsinki kiasma, without their spatial complexities.
sanaa’s string of pearls: only basement structures built so far. glass boxes and open corridor to be added later. already enigmatic … “where is it?” an empty and full, subtle and strong response in the face of so much architecture.
marthias klotz’s villa: beautiful trees in a small ravine next to it. it will have a roberto burle-marx-like water lily pond on roof.
adjaye’s villa: the idea of the european villa when confronted with “nature.”
luis mansilla’s villa: simple clear diagram/system, fits site well.
wang shu’s villa: old school hill top villa with mount fuji roofs.
ai weiwei’s villa: corridor divides box rooms into two spatial feelings.
cui kai’s villa: hillside ando with bamboos.
