今、中国で良い人材は売り手市場である。大学が大量に学生を受け入れ始めているため新卒は非常に多く就職難だとも言われるが、５年ほどの経験者を見つけるのは非常に難しい。まだまだ続く好景気に押されて数年の経験後に独立する若者が非常に多いのが理由の一つ。本当は誰かからの紹介で人を見つけるのが理想だけれど、今の状況ではそんなことも言っていられないので、うちの事務所ではウェブ上に広告を出したりしている。

さて、色々な人が面接に来て、そのうち何人かが採用になり、またそのうちの何人かは既にやめて他の事務所に移っていった。やめたうちの一人の理由は”建築だけやりたい”であった。

中国には世界のその他のエリアでは考えられないほどの巨大プロジェクトが存在し、うちのような事務所にでもそんな話が転がり込むこともある。同時にインテリア等と並行してしてやることもあるわけだが、私はそれほど違和感を感じない。もちろん諸条件が違ってくるが、ものの考え方としては共通することが多いからだ。

事務所のスタッフもとてもフレキシブルである。午前に30万㎡のマスタープランの模型をつくり、午後には50㎡のインテリアの現場に出かける。グラフィックを勉強した人も、ランドスケープを勉強した人も、インテリアを勉強した人も、アーキテクトも一緒にプロジェクトに取り組んでいる。

in current china, good designers are in demand. but job hunting for fresh graduates is not so easy because universities start accepting more and more students, finding someone with proper experience needs a lot of patience. one of the reasons is that once they a few years of experience, they may already set up a small practice in the still rapidly growing economy of china. It is still better to find people through introductions by someone you know. however, we had to advertise on job search websites.

many people came for interviews, some of them were hired, some of them had already left. the reason one of the people left was because he “want to do only architecture.”

there are super scaled projects in china which does not exist outside. even small offices like kuu sometimes get a chance to be involved in one of those. we do large ones and small ones at the same time and in fact, it does not give me a feeling of conflict. though conditions are different according to scales, when it comes to thinking, a lot of things are in common.

staff at kuu are also flexible. they, in the morning, make a model for a 300,000sqm masterplan, and in the afternoon, go check a site of 50sqm interior. those who studied graphic, landscape, interior and architecture are all working on projects together.
