SPECIFIC SOLUTION IN CHINA

i read this dialogue between hiroshi hara, toyo ito, and motomu uno in sd2007. what they are trying to do, as architects, is to articulate gaps or find twists in existing reality within the context of japan in order to find fresh bodily experiences in architecture. underlying this context is a common bodily experience that comes from democratic or capitalist thinking. they argue that bodily experiences have been changing with the cell phone, the internet, and the virtual world. after the universal space of Mies, architecture now has to have more specific solutions as a twist to this universal space. as architects, we always have to create different kinds of bodily experiences, since we claim to be experts in ‘experience.’ this should be the angle to approach a project in order to reclaim our dwindling value as architects.

in china the common bodily experience is based on its version of communism. It is quite different at various levels from living condition to something that comes from political propaganda. those body experiences are quite related to architecture and how it exists for each level.

in large developments by developers or government, the bodily experience is usually made quite standardised or conventional. they do not attempt to go over it, to create new experiences. in the end, they normally get what they want and they are stuck with it. what we need to do, as architects, is to give it a twist. because they do not have, we should insist on it. the filter is thick, but we have to go through it.
